The Kindle vs Paperback debate

So who has had the kindle vs paperback debate with a partner, friend or colleague? I know I have. What’s everyone’s thoughts?

I must admit I was most definitely the person that was totally against E-readers and digital books as my thoughts were that there was nothing better than having a physical book in your hand. Something tangible that you can feel and smell. I couldn’t understand why anyone would want to be staring at something so similar to a phone/computer screen to read.

The point were I decided to actually buy my own kindle was when I had spent weeks with adverts appearing on my Facebook page advertising books that I might be interested in but when it came to looking into purchasing them they were only on electronic format. It irritated me as the blurb for the books drew me in and I wanted to read them. So the only way to do it was to buy a kindle. I was extremely sceptical and was actually a bit disappointed that I’d given in and bought one. I bought one of the basic ones just to see how I would get on.

When it arrived it was pretty much all set up via my Amazon account which was a nice surprise, so all that was left was to start buying books and reading them.

I made a few purchases even coming across books that were free and a good choice at 99p. Once I got used to how to work my Kindle and to navigate the options and how to find what I wanted etc I genuinely had to admit that it was probably the best purchase I ever made. So many books at my fingertips on the one device. I must have roughly 450 books on my kindle at the moment. It was fantastic for going on holiday, no extra weight in the bag with trying to carry four or five bulky books. Again all on one compact device.

The other thing I hadn’t really thought of was that for the writers who released e-books was that it was the only platform for them to get their writing out there. On doing more research I discovered that a lot of the writer self publish which I thought was amazing. So now I do purchase far more e-books to support these writers who have had the confidence to give writing a go. Also if I have enjoyed a particular e-book I will buy it on paperback but not all the writers who release on the e-book format will have it on paperback.

Although don’t misunderstand me, there are so many established authors who use the e-book format now because it’s an evolvement of the day an age we’re living in and a lot of the folk taking up reading nowadays will be using some sort of electronic device to do it.

I’m very much a person who tries not to judge something unless I have tried it myself which is why I purchased a kindle and as I’ve said I’ll admit that I’m so glad I did, it’s made it so much easier for me to keep reading, even while on the move; although, to me, nothing will ever beat the smell and feel of an actual book in your hand.

Here’s to the start of 2019

Happy new year everyone!!

So my first post of the new year. I know I had mentioned in a previous post about New Years resolutions and how I prefer to keep a bucket list for the year more than anything. So my bucket list is partially done, I know that I’ll probably add more to it as the year goes along. The biggest thing I’ve put on it, is trying to spend more time with family and friends.

When I’m on days off from work I like nothing more than to be cosy at home reading or writing. While I still want to do those things, I have to make sure I make those close to me a priority and let them know that they are.

What has everyone else planned for the year coming?

My husband and I discussed starting hillwalking and trying to be a bit more active and getting outdoors in the fresh air, plus seeing a bit more of the fantastic countryside we have. We will obviously have to do our research into walks and if their suitable for us.

The picture that is posted along with this post is very true. Unless you take the first step to do something you’ll never get there. I love an inspirational, gives me motivation every so often but no one can deny the fact that this particular one is true. How do you expect to get anywhere if you don’t put the work and effort in.

I hope everyone had the best 2019 and I hope that you all achieve everything your dreaming of.

Happy New Year!!

So I just wanted to wish everyone a very happy new year and I hope that 2019 is everything that everyone could wish for.

New year is a time of change; another chance to start a fresh chapter. Life is far too short to spend on grudges or to do anything less than what makes you happy. There’s so many ways to find happiness in this life, some of it just takes a bit of extra effort. Please just always remember to be thankful for what you have.

I know there is the tradition of making new years resolutions but I always find their to easily broken or classed as a novelty so people forget about them. I like to make a yearly bucket list and start ticking them off one by one. It’s extremely satisfying. You don’t have to have lots of things on it, one or two as long as what your doing is realistic you’ll have more chance of completing it

HAPPY NEW YEAR! HERE’S TO 2019!

Music

I’m a big music lover, I’ll listen to most things and give most genres a try. I’ve got favourites in genres from cheesy pop, rock to classical.

Some songs can take you right back to a particular moment in time and make it so vivid that you can remember exact feelings and smells. Has anyone else ever had that?
I must admit I do like to listen to lesser known bands and artists, sometimes I feel there is more heart and soul in their music (this is not to say it’s true all the time). I love a band that plays their own instruments, just my personal opinion but I feel that’s what makes a band. Watching them get lost in the moment of what their doing is amazing, watching the emotion pass over faces, whether it be joy, sadness or conflict.
A good melody to start will always draw me into a song, then it has to be the lyrics matched with an appropriate voice. I think that’s a big thing is having the tone of the voice match the vocal that’s being sung.
I’m a massive fan of the Weeknd. Yes I know a lot of people will not appreciate his lyrics but if you actually sit and properly listen to a lot of his songs their amazing. My husband despairs every time I put my music on as I cannot switch off the Weeknd’s songs. It sounds cheesy but it speaks to me in a way and brings me a sense of calm. His voice and melodies totally drag me into a different world. I have far too many favourites, every one makes me feel something different.
I could discuss music and artists all day long.
I also appreciate an artist or band who can put a different spin on a song. For example the song “Never Tear Us Apart” originally by INXS has been redone by Paloma Faith and also by a girl called Bishopbriggs. All versions give something different but remain fantastic. Also “Running Up That Hill” originally by Kate Bush and then covered by Placebo, same song but very different and very good.
What are other people’s favourite genres of music? What are your favourite artists and bands? What are your favourite cover versions?

Getting the 2019 travel plans started!

So 2019 is just around the corner now and it always gets me excited for another chance to plan my travels for the year. I love to travel and experience different places and cultures, I’ve been quite a few places across the globe but there’s still so much out there to explore.

One of my favourite destinations has to be the USA. There’s so much variety in just one country. Where is everyone’s favourite travel destinations? Why are they your favourite?

When I travel I prefer to visit a destination as a local rather than a tourist (much as though I will visit the main tourist attractions if it’s my first time in a place). I’d always loved the thought when I was younger of emigrating and living abroad, I still do if I’m honest. I like to get the feel of what it would be like to live in a place as a local, so like to try Air BnB now when I go away to see what the housing is like in place and not in a hotel environment.

Planning out my travels takes me a great deal of time because I do quite a bit of research into what I’d like to see when I’m there, prices, what the accommodations are like. I spend time reading reviews on places and restaurants and am also a big advocate of trip advisor, I use it a lot. I make an itinerary to make sure I can fit in everything that I want to see in the time that I am going to be there.

At the moment I’ll be visiting Las Vegas but hope to add on a few more destinations before the end of the year. I seem to prefer the west of the USA as opposed to the east. It seems a lot more chilled and relaxed whereas the east always struck me as overly busy and stressful. What’s people’s thoughts?

Merry Xmas

I know we’re still a couple of days away from the big day haha but just wanted to wish folks a Merry Xmas and hope it’s a great time spent with your family and loved ones.
A few friends and I had a conversation about how in this day and age the true meaning of Christmas seems to have been lost amongst social media and technology that surrounds us. I am by no means immune – in fact I’m probably one of the worlds worst for it. My husband calls it FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). I tell him its because I’m more nosy than anything else haha. There is a point there. We all spend so much time with our heads in our phones etc that we tend to miss things that are going on around us. With access to everything at our fingertips it’s also creates a lot of pressure on people – especially at Christmas – to spend vast amounts of money that they just don’t have, therefore creating a vicious cycle of debt and worry.
After having the discussion with friends we had all decided that we wouldn’t do any Christmas gifts, we would all arrange s day were we all get together and enjoy spending time with each other. All my friends were in such keen agreement it just showed me how the weight was lifted off their shoulders by not having to worry about buying us all gifts. It also shows that the gift of time is probably one of the most precious gifts you can give to anyone. Time you can never get back and it’s personal.
I’m not wanting to be the cliché person who says that you just never know when someone won’t be there for you to spend time with but it’s so true. Enjoy your family and listen to their stories no matter how bored you are because all they want is to engage with you. Bring the true spirit of Christmas back and enjoy being with your nearest and dearest.

Trying out for something different

So on a previous post I had mentioned about wishing I could have had a career in a creative industry. Well starting this blog as I had previously said was about getting things off my chest but also about exploring the creative side of myself. I do love to write but never had anything that I could really get my teeth into. So, I started this blog and have also started book reviewing. I love to read anyway so thought that it would give me a challenge along with doing that. Does anyone else out there do anything along those lines? Would love to discuss how you go about it and if there’s any technical aspects you look at when doing it or if it’s just about your enjoyment or lack of that you comment on.

I’ve also started writing a piece of fiction, I’ve always had an overactive imagination so looking to put that to good use also haha. I’m hoping I’ll have it completed before I’m eighty 😛

I’m also a massive music lover (as I’ve probably mentioned as well) I like a bit of everything and will try listening to most things. What’s everyone else’s favourites or dislikes?

Nights out

Sometimes there’s just nothing better for a girl than a night out with your ladies (or lady as the case may be tonight). One of my main girlies. Love being able to head out for a night out with one of your closest where you can catch up with all the goings on of life and there is no judgement just understanding and also a solidarity of sorts.

The ladies in my life are the best thing ever. We meet up and it’s as if no time has ever passed, we start from where we left off.

I hope all the ladies in the world have girls in their life like I do

Thinking

So I thought I’d start this blog as a way to get things off my chest, become more creative and also find people who feel the same way as me at the same time.

Now I can’t promise my posts will be structured, I do have a habit of going off on a tangent and changing the subject dramatically A LOT!! Although for those of you out there who have the patience to bear with me I hope that you’ll find my musings, comments and opinions somewhat interesting or something that you can debate with.

I love lots of things in life, fashion, movies, music, reading, writing. To be honest a lot of the creative things, things I’d wished id pursued a career in but alas it wasn’t to be. I’m stuck in the rat race along with billions of other people in the world. It is my dream that people who are kinda like me will enjoy this blog. It’s all about knowing that no-one is perfect and everyone is trying to find their way through life, bit by bit, struggle by struggle and laughs through life. Life is good, we just have to find the good in it 🙂
